Top 10
(Voting during week of Aug 23-29)
UPDATES AND REMOVAL OF OUTDATED INFO MAY BE DELAYED AT TIMES BETWEEN NOW AND MID SEPTEMBER.
If there was ever any doubt about the ability of Heather Leigh to rock her way to the top in the MTB Top 10, her latest song, Wrecked should prove otherwise, remaining at #1 for the 2nd week in a row. High energy performers, Sweet Spot also continue to draw strong support from their fans. Madeira Girl remains at #2 also for the 2nd week in row. Last minute votes pushed North 2 South back into the top 3 with Good Girls Love Bad Boys returning to the #3 spot after an absence of several weeks. Note: Due to internal circumstance, votes cast after 7pm on Sunday are not included in the totals and could not be counted in determining an accurate listing of the Top 10 for this week only. Here is how the vote added up to that hour and date: 128 votes were counted for the week: #1 = 24, #2 = 19, #3 = 18, #4 = 17, #5 & #6 = 16, #7 = 8, #8 = 6, #9 =4. #10 = 0. All songs are kept in the Top 10 for a minimum of 2 weeks, and all songs in this particular list are carried over from the previous week, though normally there are some deletions and additions. 3 songs that are new to the daily music stream have been added to the Big Bay 99 as posted on the Playlist page. Voting each week determines the #1 song and order of songs in the Top 10 for the following week. One vote per day per listener.
Musicians Seek Ads, Classifieds & other artist resources can be found at the USA Entertainment link posted in the lower left column on this webpage.
MTB is considering the adoption of a widget display, such as in the example shown below, that tracks currently playing songs and displays artist, track name, album, and album art. Also displayed are a Buy link (or special link if track data is unavailable) and a Listen link. Functionality of these options is not yet fully developed.
2 artists have so far expressed an interest in
pursuing this option on the MTB website. Others are invited to
comment or make their interest
known by email to
musictampabay@msn.com.
REVERBNATION
MTB has begun to explore the resources that are available at
www.reverbnation.com. For the first time, an empirical analysis of music downloads by artists listed by global, national and local criteria exists in a form that can be sorted by music genre, including the category of all genres. The following list is a summary of local musicians heard in the MTB music stream, who can also be found there. Further modification of this list can be expected in the near future to include genre and relative ranking in the Reverbnation charts.

Pirate Radio - The Reality!

The movie Pirate Radio that was released in late 2009 is a sex, drugs and rock & roll romp set against a form of radio that previously was virtually unknown in the USA. Music Tampa Bay owes its roots to the very real Pirate Radio ship pictured above, which was anchored in the North Sea off the coast of England in 1966. It housed two 50,000+ watt AM radio stations, Britain Radio and Swinging' Radio England.
The St Pete Times published a story in conjunction with the release of the movie about the stations on this ship and its link to MTB. An on-line version of this story, including an audio track on-air archive recording and recent interview can still be found at this LINK. It describes, in part, how this 4-1/2 decades old intrusion into UK music culture evolved through a life-long broadcast career in the US, including more than 25 years as on over-the-air radio programmer in a half dozen states, including Florida and the Tampa Bay area, culminating in what is heard today on this website.
"Pirate Dude" Says...
How to feel miserable as an artistConstantly compare yourself to other artists
Talk to your family about what you do and expect them to cheer you on
Base the success of your entire career on one project
Stick with what you know
Undervalue your expertise
Let money dictate what you do
Bow to societal pressure
Only do work that your family would love
Do whatever the client / customer / venue owner / patron / investor asks
Set unachievable, overwhelming goals to be accomplished by tomorrow

MTB Upgrades & Changes
SYSTEM UPGRADES
Music streaming and website operations were moved to a new server during the summer of '09, providing for triple previous music library storage space, and 4 times previous bandwidth. Accordingly, streaming bitrates now meet or exceed FM quality at 128 kbps @ 44,100 Htz.
Music Library listings (link in panel at left) have also
been updated and are being kept relatively current. At the start of 2010, approximately 750 songs are listed and in active rotation on the MTB playlist, with hundreds more on the shelf, and still more coming in all the time.09.09.09 MTB revised the current music playlist link in panel at left) to the "Big Bay 99". In this same week, a new On Demand podcast audio player was added to the homepage, providing for instant availability of selected program features.
10.23.09 MTB initiated live streaming, providing programming direct from Pro Star Studios, St Pete during a live performance. Additional modifications have been made to enable this feature on a regular basis in future programming.
Finally, MTB now also provides an interactive music voting option, to give listeners a voice in determining how songs should be ranked in the Top 10, including selection of the #1 song in the weekly on-line streaming playlist. This feature was also used in selecting the #1 song of 2009 after a year-end review of the top 100 songs of the year replaced regular programming in late December and early January.
5 Years & 1000 Songs on MTB
Two major milestones were reached, almost simultaneously, this year. Just after Music Tampa Bay observed it's 5th Anniversary of music streaming (as of March 6th, 2010) , the 1,000th song was also added to the MTB Music Library. The total number of local artists in the music stream now exceeds 250.
vote now for your favorite top 10 song. it's easy. check the ballot box below.
"If you've clicked, you've voted, thanks".
One vote per listener per day! Any attempt to exceed this limit will NOT be accepted at the MTB server, and votes can not be recalled once they've been entered. Results determine the #1 Song and order of selections in the Top 10 for the following week.
Feature ArtisTs - James Hawkins -

He was born in Kentucky, but now lives south of the bay in Venice, often seen all around the Tampa Bay area at coffee houses and open mics. Fans can learn more by checking out his website at www.JRHawkins.com.
One track each hour in the MTB music stream.
Future Feature Artists that will be heard in weeks ahead include Rich Whiteley, Jak Kelly, Jeff O'Kelly, Jose Primero, and Steve Vaclavik. Artists who submit CD's to the PO Box above are eligible for future webplay as the MTB Feature Artist of the Week.
PLAYLISTS - The current weekly Big Bay 99, including the Top-10 & #1 Song of the Week above are posted on the Playlist page. Check the link in the column at left. Drill Baby Drill, Kill Baby Kill
Most of the oil from this year's massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico is now hidden from view, and beginning to fade from the headlines,, but its affects are certain to be felt by coastal residents, including seabirds and marine animals, for years and perhaps decades or generations to come. At least 7 Tampa Bay area artists have recognized this calamity and placed their concerns about the disaster into songs now being heard in the MTB music stream.
One such composition is an 8 minute masterpiece by the father/son team of Max and Wyatt Combs that was also produced as a music video, Fire on the Water. The video is on YouTube at this LINK. Be advised, as you might expect, it is difficult to watch in places, but well worth it. Another gulf oil song to come forth is from Heather Leigh, who asks the question in her song, Paradise Lost, that seems to have been largely lost in media coverage about the event, "What's the price of Paradise Lost?" The work is co-produceed with TV10 News Reporter Mike Deeson, and also features a video that can be seen at this LINK. Note, a short commercial precedes the clip, and it too contains images that can be difficult to watch. Next is a sort of a semi-novelty tune with a message that tells us "there's got to be a fall guy, (and) we already know his name". It's called Big Tar Ball, by Tom Stephans. Isla Del Sol musician Bobby Smith is also part of this group, pledging half the proceeds from the sale of his song written about the spill to the National Wildlife Federation. Called, Please Save Our Beaches, it also has an accompanying video at a website featuring his music at this LINK. MTB also learned recently that Tampa music magician, Baluja joined this lineup shortly after the epic began with a tune named for the oil rig that exploded and sank, causing the disaster, Deepwater Horizon. He says he knows it is "a little outdated now, but the ramifications will live on forever." The sixth song in this series is from from Gracie Grieshop of Sunset Bridge called Big Black Tears. She says it will be on a new album expected to be released soon. Rounding out the set of oil songs is a new effort by MTB favorite Charlie Souza, called Make It Right (in the Gulf of Mexico).
Charlie says "all proceeds from downloads go toward helping our effort to Make It Right in the Gulf of Mexico!". He sends these links: (1) for info -
www.FloridaCoastline.net, and (2) downloads - www.cdbaby.com/cd/CharlieSouzaBand, (3) this LINK to hook up with a Facebook project under the same heading.Another local artist, Jay Kiernan is offering his own contribution to the pool of songs about the oil crises in a tune he calls Its All About Me, Naturally. He wrote the lyrics and created a music video to the tune of Gilbert O'Sullivan's, Alone Again, Naturally. The video can be watched at this LINK. Since it is not an original composition, the song is not being added to the MTB music stream.
Two other songs that were recorded BEFORE the oil crises but are relevant to it, are currently in the daily MTB music stream. One was among the top 25 songs of 2009 by Charlie Morris that seems to have foretold the crises, called Got Greedy. The other is a breezy and beautiful ballad simply titled Gulf of Mexico from Mike Calzone. Any musician or group producing an original song the reflects the current gulf disaster is urged to make a copy available for webplay on MTB.
BIRDSTOCK - a concert by some 40 bay area artists was held this summer to help the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, one of the bay area's premier wildlife rescue organizations and a key participant in efforts to save seabirds affected by the spill. Some musicians who were part of the event, and who are also featured regularly in the MTB music stream, include: Steve Arvey, Rebekah Pulley, Ricky Wilcox, Dean Johanesen, Jim Mason, Leigh Humes, Scotty Lee & the Treble Hooks, Ronny Elliott, Big Jim Allen, Sandy Atkinson, Wendy & the Soulshakers, Julie Black, Judy Tampa & Bunko Squad, & Something Special. Sponsored by the City of St. Pete Beach, the Beach Theatre and the Corey Ave. Merchants Association, all proceeds were to benefit the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. Volunteers and donations to this worthy project are always needed. To help out, email jessicag@seabirdsanctuary.com or call 727-392-4291 or 727-254-0577.
