THE WEB RADIO ERA
Claiming to be “the worlds first” internet radio, Acoustic Energy introduced this desk top model in the Spring of 2007, that it claims will link “with any Wi-Fi network”, and is capable of “tuning in” 99% of the working internet radio stations on the world wide web (including MTB). The maker also reports that it works with “all three major streaming formats...Windows Media, MP3, and Real Media”. Like most of the new models to follow, the AE-17-16B WiFi Internet Radio is a bit pricey, initially listed at about $300. It's a long way to the $9.95 FM sets now in dollar stores across America, but its a start.

Audio quality is marginal, and various phone subscription requirements drive up the initial phone cost after rebates of under a hundred bucks to somewhere between $50-$75 in monthly plan charges with two-year minimum service commitments. Also joining the SHOUTcast club is NOKIA, which has now announced access preloaded in their new S60 3rd Edition, and that downloads are available for NN82, N21, N95 and N95 8GB Nokia phones. These developments will be watched closely with updates posted here as they become known to MTB.
